My Child doesn't seem to care about earning good grades

My Child has trouble staying organized and focused

One or more of the above

1. Create a quiet place where your child can sit and do homework. Ideally, a homework desk works best if you have the space in your home. This is a table or desk that is only used for homework. All supplies are kept here so there is no excuse that the child cannot find and eraser etc.

2. Be accessible. Make sure the work area is large enough to allow you to sit next to the child in case they need your help with homework. Some parents find their child focuses more if they sit next to them and read a book or work on something also.

3. Some children do not work well in complete silence. If you find that your child needs a little noise in order to focus better, play the radio at a very low volume.

4. Keep all school supplies in one location. This will make it simple to find a pencil or eraser when it is time to start homework. Of course, the supplies must be kept stock for this to be effective.

5. Purchase a dry erase board from your local store. This will help when it comes to working on math problems. Sticky notes can also be an effective reminder for children. They can carry them, and when the teacher gives a homework assignment the child puts a sticky note on that page so that it sticks out of the book.

6. If you have scheduled homework time to occur right after school, make sure you have some brain food available for a snack. A lot of children do not eat much at lunch. They are focused on play time so many rush through eating and even skip a lot of food in their lunch.

7. Children need structure. Create a schedule to help with homework time. Try to stay away from right after school and too close to bed time. These times have been shown to produce the worst results. Prime times are between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM depending on other family commitments.

8. No Electronics. There should not be any television, computer, cell phone, pagers, etc on during homework time. The less possible distractions will keep your child focused on the homework.

Think about what's at stake here...

Your child's self-esteem. Their independence... and their future.

Isn't it about time that you give your child the tools they need to get a great education?
